(3) Identifying and outlining an author's contention.

Just an author's idea, nothing more.
The center of identifying and outlining an author's contention starts with interrogating the article and drawing the correct information out.

The contention is just that central idea. That intersection of purpose, issue and idea that underlines everything the author is intending to say. That's why we meed to interrogate. Because sometimes the contention is unclear, hidden underneath layers of innuendo, sarcasm and PLTS.
 
However if we ask the right questions and draw out the right information we can identify this elusive contention.

So what questions to ask...

1) What is the author's purpose?
2) What are they attempting to convey?
3) What do they hope the author draws out of the article?
4) What assumptions are they attempting to challenge?

By answering these questions you can devise a contention. Essentially by answering the question...

The author makes the suggestion that...
